Terra Corpo Territorio

For some time, across La Foresta – community academy and Brave New Alps we have been passionately concerned with civic lands, collective domains, and rights of civic use (in Italian “usi cicivi”). The Lagarina Valley, like much of Trentino, is rich in historical common lands, such as wood lands, meadows, beaches of lakes, parks, orchards.

For this reason, we asked ourselves: if we could creatively reinvent the rights of civic use, what could these lands become? What needs could they meet today? Reimagined in a contemporary way, could they host regenerative subsistence practices and help us address the social and ecological crises of our time?

In 2023, Flora Mammana created a digital map of all the common lands in the Lagarina Valley in collaboration with Maurizio Napolitano and thanks to a Allianz Foundation Fellowship. We are now activating this map by regularly organising community activities on the lands we hold common rights to. Our aim is to bring these commons back into our lives and to bring us into the lives and long historical genealogy of those commons and their more-than-human inhabitants.
