Migrants in Culture mini-residency In July, Brave New Alps researcher Kate Rich undertook a mini-residency with Migrants in Culture in London. Migrants in Culture is a migrant-led art and design agency for the migrant justice social movement. The aim of the visit was to spark an exchange between Kate’s administrative research and the methods that Migrants in Culture are cultivating. Kate attended a session of Migrants in Culture’s Saturday School programme, an ongoing training space bringing creative and sustainable practices (including design & drawing and politicised somatics) to front-line migrant organisers. She also presented her research with FRICTIONS to the Migrants in Culture team. Topics of discussion included: how to switch from thinking about admin as the work of necessity to a space of opportunity, where the organisation’s vision is translated into actual practices; doing this in the particular context of a migrant social movement, where peoples’ lived experience of admin and bureaucracy are rooted in their lived experience of immigration systems; extending the approach that Migrants in Culture take to their design & drawing practice – improvisational, embodied, collective, inhibition-busting, radically inclusive, politically committed and fun – to the administrative side of their work.
