Unfolding Ecosystems – the network as method

We spent two days with Dr Fabiola Fiocco to connect around her research on institutional practices in the arts from a networked perspective, while considering what we can learn and implement around the Station for Transformation Hub at the train station of Rovereto. This meant learning from how networks such as Arts Collaboratory, Triangle Network, Another Roadmap Africa Cluster and East Europe Biennial Alliance, L’Internationale and tranzit.org are nurturing their relations and interdependence as living structures able to respond to recurring and emerging needs.
 
The focus was especially on networks as methods of work and knowledge production around 3 major poles:
● commoning: of materials, funds, spaces, archiving infrastructures;
● epistemology: knowledge, institutional know-how, glossaries, pedagogical methods;
● relationality: reciprocal acknowledgement, legitimacy, affective support, relations of care.
 
On the second day, we co-faciliated a workshop with self-organised groups and spaces in Trentino, asking what ecosystems of reciprocal exchange, support and organising are already underway in our region. The mapping on what there is already unfolding allowed us to also bring to the fore what we are still missing at a regional level, such as spaces to share methods of collective organising, a more systemic way to think about the presence of self-organised groups in towns and villages, a more empowering consciousness of the political role of our work.

Fiocco’s research project ‘Unfolding Ecosystems: Instituting Practices from a Networked Perspective’ is sustained by the General Direction for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture as part of the programme Italian Council (14th edition, 2025), aimed at the international promotion of italian contemporary art.
